MUS 111 - Music Theory I: Foundations


An summation of music theory foundations: scales, intervals, chords, rhythm; followed by an introduction to tonal harmony: diatonic triads and 7th chords, inversions, cadences, roman numeral analysis, and lead sheet symbol analysis. Exercises include three-part and four-part harmonization of melody and bass lines, short original compositions, and analysis of music literature. Weekly lab (with tutorials) includes study of sight singing, ear-training, and elemental keyboard harmony in correlation with written work. First semester.

Prerequisites & Notes
Approval of professor after appropriate diagnostic testing and/or minimum grade of C in MUS 107.
