HIS 357 - The Roman Republic


A survey of the history of Rome from the foundation of the city to the civil wars that ended the republic. The course begins with Rome’s founding kings and the revolution that overthrew them before transitioning to Rome’s breakout and the international wars that established imperial dominance in the 3rd and 2nd centuries. It concludes with the famous personalities involved in the republic’s collapse in the first century. The course also explores how Rome inspired U.S. republicanism. Either semester.
