MBS 625 - Biblical Introduction

This course is a survey of the sixty-six books of the Bible, its contents, the approaches to its study, and its use in the Church. Each book of the Bible will be studied in its literary, historical, and cultural setting in order to understand the issues it addresses, the timeless theological message that it proclaims, and the critical debates it engenders. An emphasis will be placed on relating the historical events of the biblical period in the broader historical context of the Ancient Near-East and Greco-Roman period. Old Testament books will be studied in the chronological order of the history of Israel, and New Testament books by author, rather than in the order of their place in the canon.
